| Resumo | "This paper has been commissioned by FEPS and SAMAK for the report ‘A Progressive Approach to Digital Tech: Taking Charge of Europe’s Digital Future’. The paper aims to map the key technologies underpinning the digital transformation, and to provide a structured framework suitable to analyses of their effects in the world work, the economy, democracy and citizens’ everyday life. Digital platforms, the merging of the internet and our physical environment (e.g. the ‘Internet of Things’), and automated decision-making systems, more commonly known as ‘artificial intelligence’, are identified as particularly capable of having a significant impact. The paper concludes that under the prevailing socio-economic conditions, these digital technologies, especially when considered together, carry significant risks for the cohesion of European societies.
